Season 4
is Helga predicting the future?
|
Helga "runs" P.S. 118's fourth grade with an iron fist - more accurately,
two of them; "Old Betsy" and "The Five Avengers". (Don't tell her that she only has four fingers on each hand.) However, Helga has a slightly different
response when she thinks she's in danger: sheer panic, usually including shouts of "We're all gonna die!"
("Das Subway", "Roughin' It", "Runaway Float", "Wheezin' Ed").
(Well, she handled her "dying - er, expiring
- of monkeynucleosis" ("Monkey Business") fairly calmly, and in "Career Day" she supposedly
helped stop a bank robbery with jiu-jitsu.)
Helga seems to spend her time doing three things: bossing around
her "friends", pretty much ignoring her parents (especially her
father, who wants Helga to be like her older sister Olga, whose
trophies cover the Pataki walls), and secretly having a crush on
Arnold without letting anyone, especially Arnold, know about it.
Helga puts it best: "How I love you...and yet I hate you...and
yet I love you...and yet I hate you...and yet I love you"
("Downtown As Fruits"). Not many people know how Helga really
feels about Arnold: Helga (of course), Phoebe (you never see
Helga actually tell Phoebe, but from Phoebe's reaction in "Helga
Sleepwalks", it's fairly obvious that she knows), and the school
psychiatrist ("Helga On The Couch") know for sure, and Patty (in
"Helga vs. Big Patty"), Lila (Helga tells her in "School Play"),
and Coach Wittenberg's wife (in "Best Man") have some idea about
it (but probably don't know just "how bad Helga has it"). Also,
Brainy probably knows something from all of those times he's
eavesdropped on Helga, although considering he hasn't taken it
out on Arnold, it's hard to tell. (You also have to wonder how
much the other kids remember from when Helga met Arnold in
pre-school.) You have to believe that Arnold knows as
well, after Helga told him in the movie; even though she told
him to forget that it ever happened, Arnold's "Anything you say,
Helga" is the kind of thing someone would say if they knew that
it was true but they would pretend that it wasn't if they knew
what was good for them.
Helga likes wrestling (she had tickets to a match in "False Alarm", tried to get tickets to another in
"Quantity Time", and finally managed to see a match in "Buses, Bikes, and Subways"), and hates
rats ("Das Subway") and hiking ("Roughin' It"), although she's also not particularly fond of
"football-headed schemes" or living in the shadow of her older, smarter, more talented sister Olga (especially
when Olga told Helga's entire class that Helga was a chronic bedwetter until she was seven years old).
Apparently, Helga played the tuba at one point in her life (she
gave hers to Nadine in "Monkey Business"). Helga
has one known weakness: she's allergic to strawberries
("Quantity Time"). (Well, a select few, like Phoebe, know
her second weakness, which starts with an A and has a
football-shaped head...)
Somebody asked if Helga is based on Angelica Pickles from Rugrats; although they do look a little alike, Helga appeared in the early "Arnold"
claymation shorts, which were made before Rugrats
was created.
Although it's never mentioned on the show (at least so far), the
"G" in Helga G. Pataki stands for Geraldine; it's a tribute to
former Nickelodeon executive, and co-founder of Oxygen Network,
Geraldine Laybourne. (Helga isn't the only animated
character to have a definite middle name that's never mentioned
except by her initial; Bart Simpson's middle name is Jojo.
Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart, came up with the name when
The Simpsons creator (and Craig Bartlett's
brother-in-law) Matt Groening asked her what the J should stand
for. Those of you who said "it stands for Jay" are
confusing Bart with Homer Simpson, whose middle name is
Jay.)

Helga's mother; she pretty much just mopes around the house all day, giving Olga's
trophies the occasional dusting, but without her around, Helga's and Big Bob's lives pretty much fall apart ("Quantity
Time"). However, she can surprise people with what she can do, given the chance. At one time, she
was a world-class swimmer, but she dropped out of college to get married. She also won a bull-riding title
in her youth. Just keep her away from karaoke machines ("Road Trip"), and if she's driving, make
sure she keeps her eyes out for trucks coming the other way.
(And don't let too many people know about this, as Nickelodeon
does not like mentioning things like alcohol on any of its
shows - did I tell you about the time they censored a "live"
song because it had the words "Throw back a bottle of beer"? -
but, according to the show's staff, Miriam is supposed to be an
alcoholic.)

(Award Winning) Olga Pataki

Season 4

Helga's older (she's in college), smart (she hasn't received so much as an A-minus
since third grade), popular, talented sister; it's a toss-up as to who has it worse - Olga, who tries to live
up to her own standards, or Helga, who's pretty much expected to do the same thing. (Judging from the fact
that she's a little quick to drop everything she's accomplished for some guy she met three weeks previously, it
looks like it's Olga.)
The bit about "award winning" refers to "Arnold's Thanksgiving", where the flyers with Helga's
picture on them say "Award Winning Olga Pataki's Sister"
